Welcome

Message from the president of the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Coimbra (ISCAC) - Coimbra Business School

It is with great satisfaction that the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Coimbra ISCAC | Coimbra Business School once again receives the International Congress of Accounting and Auditing. The XIX congress, in an entirely face-to-face edition, is an opportunity for all interested parties – professionals, academics, students, organizations and companies – to discuss the latest challenges in these two major areas of knowledge.

The theme of the congress – "The impact of big data and artificial intelligence” – presents an opportunity for the profession to renew and refocus on a set of new requirements, procedures and, above all, never foreseen new realities.

The digital transition and transformation of the economy and society, the European digital spaces, data centres, digital taxation, artificial intelligence, blockchain and automation are completely disruptive to accounting and auditing. Therefore, they create a new context, a new application and a new registry in these fields of knowledge.

This forum is essential to jointly align strategies and proposals for action in an international environment, in order to provide an appropriate financial order and regulation to financial statements and business sciences in general, favouring the public welfare, trust in organizations, transparency, efficiency and effectiveness, economy in resource management and sustainability.

The exercise of the profession of accountant and auditor provides the first contact with this virtual global world, enabling these professionals to have an overall perspective of the reality, and making them main actors in this new paradigm. It is based on this vision that we intend the XIX CICA to progress and to become a reference in the areas of accounting and auditing, hence honouring their professionals. Message from the president of the Order of Certified Accountants

The digital challenge and sustainability were the central themes of the last two congresses that took place in 2019 and 2022 and were organized by the Order of Certified Accountants (OCA). The objective set was clear: to motivate a vast and heterogeneous professional class to discuss themes that have already been incorporated into the daily lives of certified accountants.

The defined purposes have been achieved. The great challenges that any society or any profession face have to be dealt with boldly and with courage. In addition to regulating the profession, it is up to a professional order – and, in this case, the OCA - to explore and point out the paths that its leadership deems most appropriate for its members to follow. We have been in accordance with this line of reasoning in the two congresses held at the Altice Arena, and this is what we daily seek to instil in the management and in the everyday strategy of this organisation. Certified accountants are OCA’s priority.

The International Congress of Accounting and Auditing (CICA) has been taking place in mismatched years. On October the 12th and the 13th 2023, ISCAC - Coimbra Business School, in Quinta Agrícola – Bencanta, will host the XIX CICA. This will be the first time after the pandemic that this event will take place in a face-to-face format. Attendants may follow the plenary sessions through the Order’s platforms.

"The impact of big data and artificial intelligence” was the theme defined for the XIX CICA, and this choice couldn't have been more relevant and appropriate. In fact, many of the classic tasks that have always been a responsibility of certified accountants will cross (or have already crossed) to the "land” of the machines. However, this does not mean that professionals will be out of work. Not even close. They will be freed from the most repetitive tasks implied in their job, now taking full care of the profession’s mission of being the entrepreneur’s counsellor and right-hand man – the result of their qualification and know-how. This XIX CICA is intended to be a great opportunity for technical and academic reflection, tearing horizons on subjects that will stay with us in the coming times. We will experience two hectic and intense days, in which we want to strengthen ties and to promote future partnerships.

A profession that strives to keep high standards of quality and to recycle its knowledge cannot miss the academy’s inputs, in the same way as the academy cannot be disconnected from the daily life of the profession. The concrete application of knowledge resulting from the undertaken research in the area will be an asset for everyone. And everyone will benefit from this successful strategic partnership.

The very quality of accountability will depend on this interaction that we wish to see enhanced in Coimbra.

We therefore look forward to welcoming in the beautiful "city of students” Portuguese and non-Portuguese academics and professionals, in particular people coming from Portuguese speaking countries. In the meantime, you can find on this microsite all useful and updated information concerning our fall 2023 event.
